On the assumption that greater absorbtion would increase Rogaine's effectiveness, especially in the thicker-skinned front of the head, doctors are trying to devise ways to aid its penetration of the follicles. Dr. Adam Lewenberg, a Manhattan internist and hair-loss specialist, mixes Rogaine with the antiwrinkle substance Retin-A. There is evidence that Retin-A enhances absorption of minoxidil by removing dead outer skin cells, and Lewenberg says the combo makes hair loss preventable in 95 percent of cases, genetics be damned. His patients use a special hair spray (the price of $35 per bottle includes an office visit) three or four times daily instead of twice (the suggested frequency for Rogaine alone, which is usually rubbed on).
